    The first exodus generation failed the test, depriving themselves of the rest that God had prepared for them. The Sabbath functions as a temporal anticipation of the eternal rest that all those who persevere in Christ are destined to experience and enjoy.

    One way to help keep our minds focused on Jesus and our hearts softened to his calling is to take time to keep the Sabbath.

    The Sabbath reminds us that all our personal ambition, our striving for something more, and our futile pursuits to find fulfillment apart from God are dead ends.

    We must learn to find true contentment in the things that God has given us without griping and moaning, without comparing what we’ve been given to what others have been given, without being envious of what others have, and without allowing bitterness and resentment to infiltrate our lives and corrupt our hearts.

    Trust and gratitude unlock the blessings of rest that God wants us to experience in him the rest of the year.
