Sermon: Motivation

Scripture: Matthew 20:17-28

1. Am I Driven by my Desires?

James and John were interested in power, position and personal preference.

2. Am I Prepared to Pay the Price?

Philippians 1:29: “For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for him.”

To “drink the cup” has reference not only to suffering, but also refers to remaining faithful to the end.

3. Am I Focused on Selfishness or Servanthood?

Philippians 2:3-7, Jesus left His throne in order to serve us: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.”
