The Pax Romana, the “peace of Rome” as outlined by Dennis Duling, extended from 27 BCE to 161 CE, was made possible by military force. The rigid stratification of society left the poor poorer and the rich richer.

The world into which Jesus was born was no less violent and unsettled than the one we live in now.

From his birth to his resurrection and ascension, the incarnation of Christ acknowledges and redeems human suffering.

 

 

The incarnation was God’s way of saying…

Imagine the joy the shepherds felt— after the initial fear that was caused and yet calmed by the angels—when leaving the fields to find the baby in Bethlehem.

The angels, knowing their presence is terrifying to the shepherds (and to us!), do not say, “Run and hide! The holy God is coming near!” No! They say, “Do not be afraid.
