Kelly Givens explains Ash Wednesday in her article What is Ash Wednesday. Given says, “Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the season known as Lent. Lent is the period of forty days before Easter Sunday (not including the six Sundays), when many of our fellow brothers and sisters “set aside a time for confession and fasting, marking an intentional season of focus on Christ’s life, ministry, sacrifice, and resurrection.”

Adele Calhoun in the Spiritual Disciplines Handbook said, confession is “a way of opening myself to God within the safety of the divine love so I can authentically seek transformation. Confession embraces Christ’s gift of forgiveness and restoration while setting us on the path to renewal and change.”

The action of repentance should consist of remorse, confession and correction. Repentance helps reveal our relationship with God. Repentance is more than apologizing for our wrongdoings, and it’s more than a religious ritual.

Repentance Study Bible Tools shares that, “Repentance is not just offering lip service to God; it is turning from ways that lead to sin, and turning to ways that follow what God says is best. It is a complete change of what we say and do as an outward display of our inward commitment to remove the destructive habits that lead to sin.”
